Age: Late 20s
Description: Pale, white hair and red eyes, all traits befitting the war title Shiroyasha (white demon). Other than that his build (aside from some decent muscle) and height (177 cm) is average, and he slouches and drags his feet behind him. He doesn't paint a threatening picture, especially not when you add his half lidded eyes that make him look dead already, and the wooden sword at his hip. Nothing to see here.
Physical changes: N/A
Powers: Aside from the typical main anime character abilities of being able to live through being punched through walls and bleed far more than a living being should be capable of without dying, and some greater than normal strength, he's just a regular old human. No special abilities to speak of.
History: He's the main character I ain't writing 550+ chapters of history
Hell Status: Limbo case.
What Brings Them To Hell: With all the good things that Gintoki has done - like saving people's lives, reuniting families once torn apart by money or pride or other puny things, adopting a kid with nowhere to go - you'd think maybe he should go to heaven. But with how much blood there is on his hands (through fighting in a war and chopping off his own father's head - long story), and how he aside from those grand gestures of goodness is a lazy glutton who drinks, loves a good fight, gambles and sleeps around and has basically no sense of maturity and adult responsibility whatsoever... Well. It becomes a bit more complicated.
The Pitch: This isn't the shounen protagonist you're looking for.
(Or, I guess, seeing as this is hell, maybe it is.)
Gintoki will tell you all about how Shounen JUMP the Japanese comic magazine is all about stories of love, family, courage, hopes and dreams. Somehow, this useless lump of an old man with no aspirations and great dreams to become the Hokage or the Pirate King to speak of, who drinks and gambles his money away rather than pay the rent and steals the yen coins a stranger drops on the ground, has found himself as the protagonist and title character of one of the most popular and long running Shounen JUMP series.
Nobody can tell you why.
Or, well-- Perhaps it's because in a magazine filled with plucky, cheerful, loud and optimistic teenagers who fight to accomplish great things, perhaps a tired adult whose great dreams were basically blown into smithereens is a breath of fresh air. Wait, is it just me or does it smell like crap? And I mean actual crap. This fucking manga belongs in the gutter together with its protag.
He enjoys beating the crap out of people. Even though he has kids and a dog to feed, most of his money disappears into pachinko machines and sake bottles. He'd rather spend money on strawberry milk, parfaits and JUMP than rent. He essentially steals a little boy's savings. He makes fun of transvestites, tells people to kill themselves and peeks at undressing women. Also, he picks his nose.
Gross as hell.
Still. When a woman wanted to be a firefighter, he was the first to call her a firewoman. When a group of orphans who lost the only father figure they had came to Gintoki to ask that he avenge their father, even if that father did bad things (we're talking murder), Gintoki said that if he didn't take on that suicide mission, his soul would die. When a dying courtesan's wish was to be reunited with the man she loved but couldn't be with, Gintoki overthrew the entire government to make that happen. When something to protect comes within the reach of his wooden sword, he'll bend the heavens to protect it.
He has killed an innumerable amount of people and lost countless comrades (but he did count), he lost the most important person in his life, and he blames himself for all of this. But somehow he has found the strength to carry on in the most idiotic of friends and family, and although he has more reasons than most to hate the world, he instead loves it with all his heart.
And that is why he is the shounen protagonist we all deserve.
Setting Fit: Gintoki has always thought that he was meant for hell. If you ask him, he's done far too many bad things to be pardoned. While he's not sure he believed in life after death, ending up in hell, even as a limbo case, won't surprise him at all. In fact, he may even find himself pretty neatly at home, especially if he isn't forced to do community service. He'll enjoy the relative lawlessness of the place, because rules aren't really his thing. Lack of sweets, however, will be THE WORST THING EVER. He is offended.
At some point, he might want to start up some kind of jack of all trades business, because that's what he did back home and anything else is, quite frankly, boring. He makes faces at the concept of a job. He might, however, be interested in the profession as reaper, because it doesn't seem very dull, and it'll appeal to his helpful and protective side. And he'll support any and all sweets smuggling.
